The property is located 10 minutes from Zezere lake/Dornes, Portugal on a 1600m2 plot adjacent to a pine forest and agricultural reserve zone. The house, which was originally built early 20th century, was completely renovated in such way that may be divided into two completely independent houses, or as one large house. Some of the existing stone walls and chimney needed to be reconstructed to be structural sound, as well as reconfiguring the wall using the same stone on one side and brick wall on the other with  insulation and air gaps in between. The same insulate material has also been installed in the roof under the roof tiles.

All the openings were increased in size to allow more sun light as well as allow better visual access to the landscape, forests, and distant mountains. All windows glass doors are double glazed PVC type.  The house is completely prepared for both air-condition units as well as central heating systems and at the moment the new recuperator de calor warms nicely the space.

The main living area is a double volume with very good natural light which is filltred through some of the stain glass windows. This space includes an open modern kitchen as well as the dinning area, and a wooden stairs leading to the bedroom mezzanine above .

The current owners, both architects, tried to maintain the original house design, respecting the beauty of the local stone on the façades and interior walls. In addition they used/installed Portuguese ´beirado´ type tiles on the roof and incorporated arches with a design characteristic of the locally used arches in some of the monasteries. They also were careful in maintaining same chimney design and dimensions whilst  adding some modern design elements like the triangle and squares windows.

The garden, which is still work in progress, is planned to be an extension of the peaceful feeling surrounding the plot. Existing chestnut and other trees are spread around, next to the existing well and a once irrigation tanque now has been transform into a pond where a budda statue drips water from a bowl to a small cascade and the higher deck an inviting pergola will shade a relaxing sitting area.
