Enjoy relaxing living in a beautiful 85m2 stone built two bedroom house directly above a sweet traditional taverna in the town of Spili Rethymno Crete.
The front door and windows are UPVC double glazed also a fly screen door the windows that have shutters and fly screens.
As you enter the front door it leads you straight into the spacious kitchen/diner with double stainless steel sinks and light coloured kitchen cabinets and a huge storage cupboard from floor to ceiling that I use as a larder.
The shower room has a decent sized walk in shower a pedestal toilet and a wash hand basin with a mirrored cabinet installed above the sink there is plumbing and recess space for a washing machine. A storage cupboard is directly above the washing machine area. The bathroom was recently renovated in white tiles from floor to ceiling and has terrazzo marble flooring. A window with fly screen and shutter. Above the shower room is a storage space the whole size of the shower room and aprox 1 metre in height.
Leading out from the kitchen you enter the living room area which is very large and has beautiful terrazzo flooring. There are two entrance doors to the living area as it was previously two separate rooms ( I use one of the doorways to house my fridge freezer as it fits in there rather well) The living area was rebuilt and renovated to make a large living area before I bought it. The living area is central to the house which actually works very well as in summer it is very cool in the hottest of days and then very warm in the winter months. It has two ceiling light fittings which serve very bright light and makes for a very comfortable bright living space.
The larger main bedroom has a large fitted wardrobe from ceiling to floor for optimal storage space. One large window and beautiful wooden french doors leading out to the balcony. The floor has terrazzo marble tiles.
The second bedroom has traditional hand made tiles from the 1960s on the floor in a chequered design.
Each tile is unique which makes it even more beautiful so I decided to keep them as I just loved the thought of someone making them by hand and carefully placing them.
Also in the second bedroom there is a large glass door leading out to the balcony.
BALCONY The balcony stretches out across the whole length of the front of the house. It has a wonderful view of the little church across the street and over the buildings towards the mountains to each side and you can even see the Spili Monastery in the distance.
We are not central to the village (we are 3 minutes walk into the village) which means we are in a very pleasant quieter area just before you leave the village we are above the last taverna (Sideradiko) on the left. it take us a few minutes walk to reach the centre of the village..
There is plenty of street parking available 24/7.
The neighbours are all quite elderly or middle aged very polite and also extremely kind. I have on occasion opened my door to find bags of lemons or oranges tied to the handle.
One sweet neighbour brought us eggs another brought us cakes and at easter we were invited into their houses for roast lamb and all kinds of sweet treats.They are sweet kind considerate and very welcoming but on the face of it they do not intrude or bother us in any way at all.
Spili is well known for it's Lion Fountains and it's natural spring mountain water.You can DRINK the organic FRESH WATER from the taps here (which saves you a fortune and also saves you from carrying bottled water home.)
Spili is centrally located in Crete and perfect for exploring the island.
The house is located next to the (Kedros mountains) and you have the pleasure of going in either direction in order to visit some of the most beautiful beaches on Crete it is only a 20 minute drive to the north of the island (Rethymno) and 20 minutes to the south of the island.
It is a great spot to enjoy your holiday if you want to explore the west of Crete (Chania) or the east (Heraklion and Lasithi) from this perfect central location.
There is also a very dependable and regular bus service which can also be of use to you . You will find the bus stop directly in front of the taverna.
The walls are 21 inches thick which keeps the house very cool in the summer.
there are fly screens on all windows at the front of the house so you can open the windows with out the worry of flying insects. (I had one mosquito bite this year) and I am a magnet for mosquitoes but I did no have any problems since I have lived in the house permanently for over two years.
We also have a full wifi connection.
Portable air con which can be moved from the front of the house to the back very easily as it is on wheels.
