Last updated: 20/11/09
Golden Stone Manor is situated in the heart of the village of Alvorge and has been run as an exclusive bed and breakfast establishment.
The house has been lovingly restored to retain as much of the character of the property as possible including hand carved stone window and door surrounds, decorative wooden ceilings and wood panelling to walls.
The main entrance has a hand-carved decorated stone surround and the original wooden, double opening doors have been retained and restored. The entrance leads into a double height entrance vestibule with a wooden staircase to the first floor accommodation.
To the right of the main entrance there is a spacious en-suite bedroom with a dressing room and an external part glazed door with internal wood shutters. There is a second suite to the ground floor, which can be accessed either from the rear of the manor house of via a second internal staircase at the opposite end of the property. It has a large bedroom, internal wood shutters, ensuite bathroom and an entrance hall/study room with an part glazed wooden door leading to the garden.
Off this bedroom there is a second hallway with an external door with internal wood shutters, which leads to the front of the manor house. Also off the hallway there is a study room, which has been partially renovated and could be converted into another bedroom if required to provide a family suite. There is a wine store (adega) to the ground floor.
The staircase to the first floor has a spacious landing area leading to a hallway running the length of the manor house. Off this hallway there is a formal living room, again with restored wooden flooring and double opening wooden doors. The living room has a 'Juliet' balcony to the front of the manor house. There is a suite with bedroom, dressing room and bathroom. There are four further bedrooms to this floor.
At the end of the hallway there is an internal staircase which leads down to the second ground floor suite and up to the attic. The staircase also has a landing area which opens onto a 'Juliet' balcony overlooking the rear of the manor house.
There is a large kitchen diner with a double height ceiling , traditional wooden panelling, exposed stone walls and a large traditional style fireplace and chimney, which has been restored. It has wooden units and marble work surfaces as well as a double marble sink and drainer. The kitchen has two double doors to the courtyard garden.
There is a spacious attic which is currently divided into two rooms and not used as living accommodation, however it could be converted. There is a single storey rustic kitchen adjoining the kitchen diner. This room has not been restore however electrics have been installed.
The manor house is set on a plot measuring approximately 2,000m2. At the rear of the manor house there is a private, walled courtyard garden and two substantial detached barns. The first stone barn is divided into several room divisions and is set over two floors. The second is open fronted and also has a wooden beamed roof with kingposts. This barn has been used as under cover parking. The manor house has both a formal courtyard garden and a large enclosed field. The courtyard garden has a covered sitting area. There is ample parking for around four vehicles and there is a variety of mature shrubs and trees. The property has two boreholes and there is plenty of room to have a pool installed if required. The manor house is being sold with some of the furnishings including curtains and bedroom furniture. A full list of the items to be sold with the manor house is available upon request.
Golden Stone Manor is situated on a quiet street but is within walking distance of Alvorge which has several cafes, restaurants, a mini-market, butchers, school and library. The manor house is within a half an hours' drive of Coimbra, Portugal's third city. Coimbra is an historic city, home to Portugal's oldest university. The closest airport is at Porto, which is approximately one and a half hours by car. More details at http://www.chavetejo.com/alvorge55208.htm
